Guilherme Barros and Tomás Glória are distinguished on Energy Day

On May 29, on the Energy Day, following the debate panels, the merit awards for the DEEC energy sector were presented.

Guilherme Barros won the 12th edition of the Engineer Ivo Gonçalves Merit Award, an academic distinction granted annually to a student in the Master’s Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering (MEEC) who, during the current academic year, is specializing in the field of energy.

The professional career of Engineer Fernando Ivo Gonçalves (1923-2012) focused on specializing in solving problems within the electrical energy sector, specifically in hydraulic and thermal production planning and high-voltage network operation. He was a student and professor at Técnico, director of the national load dispatcher, president of the Portuguese international interconnection commission, and chairman of the board of directors at EDP. The award was presented by Dr. Nuno Ivo Gonçalves, son of Eng. Ivo Gonçalves.

Next, Tomás Glória was honored with the 1st edition of the Professor Sucena Paiva Award, an academic distinction granted annually to the student who graduated from MEEC with the highest GPA and a specialization in Energy.

Sucena Paiva is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Lisbon. He is widely recognized as one of the leading authorities in the field of electrical energy systems and renewable energies in Portugal. He graduated in Electrical Engineering from Técnico in 1966, completed his PhD at the prestigious Imperial College of Science and Technology in London in 1972, and became a full professor in 1980, with teaching and scientific activities focused on electrical network analysis and energy system management. The ceremony included a speech by Professor Sucena Paiva, who reminisced a bit about his journey at Técnico. "It is a great honor for me to have received this invitation from Professor Pedro Carvalho to establish this award. (...) As we all know, nothing in this world is done without energy," he highlighted, congratulating the award winner.
