Miguel Cardoso wins the Celfinet Merit Award

Miguel Cardoso, a student in the Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, won the latest edition of the Celfinet Merit Award, granted within the scope of the Telecommunications Systems course. “I feel very grateful for this award,” he said, stressing that it served as motivation for students throughout the semester: “from the moment this award was announced, a friendly competition began,” and “it undoubtedly motivated students to put in greater effort.”
The ceremony was attended by Paula Queluz and António Rodrigues, the lecturers responsible for the course; by Rogério Colaço, President of Instituto Superior Técnico; and by Carlos Caseiro, representing Celfinet.
Regarding collaboration with companies and the value of connecting with real-world contexts, António Rodrigues, a Técnico lecturer representing the department, emphasised that “we have access to things we would not have if the company were not collaborating with us, namely network data, real data, which allows us to work on real problems.”
Rogério Colaço highlighted the relevance of this award, reinforcing the recognition of students’ efforts and the connection with industry. Carlos Caseiro, in turn, stressed the importance of the sector and of valuing talent, stating that “this telecommunications area is one that remains very much alive.” “Networks continue to evolve technologically and are becoming increasingly complex. We increasingly need talent,” he added.
In addition to the prize awarded to the student, amounting to €1,800, the initiative also included a donation to DEEC, intended to improve the quality of teaching in the course, in the amount of €1,200.
