Colégio do Sagrado Coração de Maria came to learn about superconductors

On April 28, we welcomed students from Colégio Sagrado do Coração de Maria in Lisbon. The visit began with a brief presentation about the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, delivered by Professor João Fernandes. During the session, the professor covered the department’s research areas, its degree programs, and the respective admission averages. The students also learned about the main student groups and teams within the department, such as FST Lisboa, TLMoto, and Técnico Solar Boat.

Next, the students visited the Energy and Sustainability module and the Multimedia and Telecommunications module.

In the first module, the students visited the electrical machines laboratory, where they observed experiments involving superconductor levitation and electromagnetic induction. João Fernandes demonstrated how physics is applied in electric motors and in the particle accelerator at CERN.

The experiments continued in the Multimedia and Telecommunications module, where Professor Custódio Peixeiro demonstrated the main properties of electromagnetic waves. The students were able to observe Snell–Descartes laws in practice through demonstrations using music.

The visit ended with the customary group photo on the North Tower staircase and an invitation for future visits to the department.
