FCT opens applications for Doctoral Research Scholarships 2025

The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) will award more than 1,500 Research Grants for Doctorate students and those enrolled in this level of education. The program includes two types of applications:
- General line: for students who wish to carry out their research in an academic environment.
- Specific line: for students who wish to conduct research in a setting more closely related to the business and social sectors – including in companies, collaborative laboratories, technology and innovation centers, other interface centers, public administration entities, or third-sector organizations such as museums, hospitals, associations in various fields (environment, culture, sports), and non-governmental organizations.
What are the available areas?
For the general track, students from any research area may apply. However, for the specific track, candidates may apply in the following areas:
- artificial intelligence;
- advanced computing;
- data analysis and Big Data;
- networks;
- cybersecurity;
- automation;
- Open Science.
What are the requirements?
To apply for a doctoral grant, the following conditions must be met:
- Must not have previously received any doctoral grant or a doctoral grant directly funded by FCT, regardless of its duration.
- Must not hold a doctoral degree.
- Must reside permanently or habitually in Portugal if applying for a grant that involves either Portugal and abroad or entirely abroad.
