Colloquium: When the Smallest AI Meets the Biggest Data – Nanosecond Discovery at the CERN LHC & The Future of FastML
The event will feature Thea Aarrestad (Senior Postdoctoral Researcher, ETH Zurich), a specialist in fast machine learning and particle physics; Professor Mário Figueiredo (DEEC / IT), a specialist in machine learning and signal processing; and Professor Arlindo Oliveira (DEI / INESC-ID), a specialist in AI, algorithms and bioinformatics. This will be followed by a debate entitled “The Future of Fast Machine Learning”, focusing on future perspectives for the development of processors dedicated to fast machine learning.

“Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: Diagnosis, Treatment and Personalised Care” | Talk series “Artificial Intelligence in Interaction with the Physical World”
The following topics will be addressed in this conference:
- Automated diagnosis through the analysis of medical images (X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and mammograms) to speed up and improve diagnostic accuracy;
- Early disease detection and diagnosis of rare diseases, using algorithms that analyse large volumes of hospital data and social networks to anticipate outbreaks and identify complex patterns;
- Precision medicine, where AI combines genetic data and medical histories to recommend treatments tailored to each patient;
- Home monitoring of patients and dependants using wearable devices for continuous and personalised follow-up;
- Accelerated drug discovery through the simulation of molecular interactions, paving the way for new medicines;
- Robotic surgery for safer and more precise procedures;
- And optimised hospital management, improving scheduling, logistics and resource use in healthcare services.

Telethon 2026
This event is a technology competition in which the challenge for undergraduate student teams is to characterise a case study on the use of 5G in one of the identified economic sectors.
The aim is to familiarise students with Telecommunications from a global perspective, under the motto “Learn, Build and Transform Telecommunications”.

“Ethics and Social Responsibility of AI” | Talk series “Artificial Intelligence in Interaction with the Physical World”
The following topics will be explored:
- Legal responsibility in the event of accidents involving autonomous systems;
- Issues of data privacy in data collection by sensors in public and private spaces;
- Socioeconomic impacts of automation in different sectors;
- Ensuring equity in access to and benefits from physical AI technologies;
- Transparency and explainability of decision-making systems that affect the physical world;
- Definition of ethical standards for the development of autonomous systems; and the need for appropriate national and international regulatory frameworks.
