The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI) at Instituto Superior Técnico, are pleased to announce the IST Distinguished Lecture “Unlocking Generative AI with Ubiquitous HW and Open SW”, by Dr. Wei Li, on 25th October.

Generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT have substantially accelerated our decades-long journey to an “AI Everywhere” reality. While discussions abound on whether these AI models will replace or complement human ingenuity for professionals ranging from programmers to artists, the societal value of unlocking such critical technologies cannot be overstated. While the explosion in size and complexity of the models and their voracity for data and compute naturally lend itself to making Generative AI the domain of a few pioneering companies, early design decisions emphasizing the use of ubiquitous hardware and open software are critical to ensuring wider future access.

Dr. Wei Li is Vice-President and General Manager of Artificial Intelligence Engineering Software at Intel, received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell University, and is a frequent speaker at leading industry and academic conferences. Dr. Li has had a passion for making things faster throughout his career in Supercomputing, Data Center transformation, and most recently AI. He leads a team of engineering “magicians” who are working to make AI everywhere and for everyone a reality by building open, efficient, and sustainable AI systems with responsible governance.
