GSI promotes internship opportunities at FAIR

Deadline for summer internship applications: April 30.

The GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research) is a German research institute located in Darmstadt, specializing in particle physics and nuclear physics. Every year, it welcomes researchers and students. Candidates can participate in various types of programs, including lectures, curriculum units in a laboratory environment, and professional internships in fields such as electrical engineering, electronics, and aerospace, with the opportunity to conduct research at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), a facility currently under construction, which will be dedicated to particle physics and nuclear physics research.

The summer school is one of the main programs, involving research at the European Space Agency (ESA), including topics like radiation and applied physics at FAIR. This year’s edition will run from August 24 to September 9, and applications must be submitted by April 30.

On the other hand, the GET_INvolved program is also promoted, offering internships according to the student's academic level, with no specific application deadline. Students can apply throughout the year, up to 5 months before the desired internship start date. The duration depends on the type of program selected.

Who can apply?

There are various types of programs that can include students from undergraduate to doctoral levels, as well as researchers in fields such as electronics, electrical engineering, aerospace, nuclear physics, atomic physics, mechanics, project management, administrative areas, among others.

How should applications be submitted?

Depending on the type of internship desired, different documents may be required. However, candidates generally need to provide the following:

  • updated curriculum vitae;
  • proof of enrollment in the indicated academic program and institution;
  • justification for the choice of internship, including how it aligns with the courses taken;
  • other relevant certificates.

Recommendation letters may also be submitted.
