Energy storage systems in the electricity grid: what are we waiting for?

Rui Castro, Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Coordinator of the Master Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering, discusses the need for energy storage systems in an opinion article published in the newspaper "Jornal i" on October 31, 2023.

The author states that currently in Portugal, "Hydroelectric storage is not enough to guarantee the safe operation of the electricity system, and it is still essential to use the regulation capacities of natural gas plants."

According to the author, "Portugal must prepare for the future (almost?) 100% renewable". "To this end, there is an urgent need to invest in storage systems, … by installing energy storage units that will be essential for the safe operation of the electricity system of the future, in an environment without natural gas plants."
