The Shanghai ranking, in the category of academic subjects, placed Electrical and Computer Engineering in the 76-100 range worldwide. The University of Lisbon, which includes the Instituto Superior Técnico, was ranked between 201-300 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, being considered the best in the country in this field of engineering.

The rankings use "objective academic indicators and third-party data to measure the performance of universities worldwide in their respective disciplines, covering 5 main evaluation categories, such as world-class faculty, world-class results, high-quality research, research impact, and international collaboration," according to the official website.
