Students from Escola Secundária Gago Coutinho participate in experiments with radio waves

On January 16, we received a visit from the students of Escola Secundária Gago Coutinho at the North Tower of the Alameda campus. The students visited the Multimedia and Telecommunications modules, as well as the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics module.

The presentation of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) was made by Professor Sónia Pinto, who introduced the students to the courses and some of the extracurricular activities available.

The first module was presented by Professor Custódio Peixeiro. The students learned a bit about the history of electromagnetic wave studies, including the contributions of scientists such as James Clerk Maxwell, and participated in the Hertz experiment.

The Artificial Intelligence and Robotics module, promoted by the Institute of Systems and Robotics, was presented by Bárbara Teixeira and members of SocRob@Home. In addition to learning some of the concepts in the field, the students had the opportunity to interact with a robot that simulated receiving students at a party.

The visit ended with a photograph taken at the entrance of the tower, where the students showed special interest in the prototypes from FST Lisboa on display.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering invites students and teachers to repeat the visit and explore the different available modules.
