On July 22, student António José Evaristo Farinhas successfully defended his thesis entitled “Quality-Controlled and Reliable Language Generation: From Applications to Theory”, under the supervision of Professor André Filipe Torres Martins, faculty member at DEEC. He was awarded the PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. The defense took place at the PA-3 Amphitheater, in the Mathematics Pavilion at IST, on the Alameda campus.

The examination committee was chaired by Professor Helena Maria dos Santos Geirinhas Ramos, Full Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Técnico, and composed of the following members: Professor Kyunghyun Cho, Professor (equivalent to Full Professor), Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, USA, Professor André Filipe Torres Martins, Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Professor Bruno Emanuel da Graça Martins, Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Professor Sean Welleck, Assistant Professor, School of Computer Science, Language Technologies Institute, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), USA, Professor Rui Miguel Carrasqueiro Henriques, Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, and Dr. Adam Fisch, Research Scientist, Seattle, Washington, USA, a recognized expert in the scientific field of the thesis.
