Applications for the Ph.D. Programme in Electrical and Computer Engineering (PDEEC) can be submitted at any time, but they are processed at two cut-off dates:

• between mid-June to mid-July,
• between early-December and early-January.

In the 2025/2026 academic year, dates are as follows:

• 2025 June 16^th to 2025 July 20^th,
• 2025 December 2^nd to 2026 January 9^th.

Before application, the candidate must choose a supervising team (between 1 and 3 researchers) by mutual consent.  It is recommended that the supervisor is chosen among faculty members of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC), and that the work is carried out in the DEEC research centre to which the supervisor is affiliated to.  In conjunction with the supervising team, the candidate must prepare a study plan, which includes both the research project and the courses to be enrolled.

Applications will be analysed by PDEEC’s Scientific Committee, who will determine if the candidate has the adequate profile to be accepted and will issue a recommendation to IST’s Scientific Council.

The application is composed of the following information from the candidate:

• application form (at the corresponding website), requiring personal data and the identification of Electrical and Computer Engineering as the scientific area;
• identification of the supervisor, and co-supervisor(s), if applicable, who is/are required to confirm acceptance;
• study plan, prepared by the supervising team;
• curriculum vitae;
• certificate proving the academic degree(s), with indication of average(s) grade(s);

• identification document (e.g., citizen card or passport);
• at least, 2 recommendation letters,
• a motivation letter;
• other documents that the candidate considers relevant for the application evaluation.
