Artificial Intelligence helps identify patterns in butterfly wings, by Margarida Silveira

Episode 1718 of Podcast "90 seconds of science", by Antena 1

Margarida Silveira, professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and researcher at the Institute of Systems and Robotics (ISR), developed a machine learning model that is capable of identifying patterns in butterfly wings.

The work was developed in collaboration with Antónia Monteiro's laboratory at the Department of Biology at the University of Singapore.

Based on machine learning techniques, a convolutional neural network model was trained with images of butterflies. Thus, measurements that previously took a long time to make manually are now made in a matter of seconds.
