EPAV-Sintra came to learn about today’s challenges in artificial intelligence and robotics

On November 21, we welcomed more than 30 students from the Alda Brandão Professional School (EPAV) in Sintra. The visit began with a presentation of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering by Daniela Leonardo, who introduced the department’s scientific areas. It also included an overview of the current research being carried out by some of the faculty members, such as Catarina Barata, who explores the applications of artificial intelligence in medicine, and Paula Queluz, who is part of the team behind the PORTRAIT project, which proposes new methods for projecting omnidirectional (360°) images onto a plane, aiming to minimize the perception of distortions.

The students also learned about the study programs and the extracurricular activities available.

They then took part in the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics module, followed by the Networks and Computers module.

In the first module, Professor Alberto Vale discussed the challenges of artificial intelligence and robotics over the years, highlighting some of the professions that existed before the development of technologies such as smartphones.

Next, in the Networks and Computers module, Professors António Grilo and Paulo Pereira introduced some applications of the “internet of things,” including how automatic call handling works and how motion sensors operate.

The visit concluded with the usual group photo on the north tower staircase.
