DEEC TALK with António M. Vallera

On November 5, the session “Battery Swapping for Mobility” will take place in auditorium EA1. The lecture will feature António M. Vallera, Full Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL).

About the Speaker

António M. Vallera holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge (Cavendish Laboratory). He was Full Professor at FCUL, where he retired as Vice-Rector, and remains active in research. His interest in the energy field began with photovoltaic technology and is now focused on the transition to decarbonized energy and transport systems.

Abstract

After years of misguided policies, the European Union is finally beginning to accept that the future of road transport is battery-electric. The impact of mobility on the power system will be enormous — electricity consumption would increase by about 50% if the transition happened today — and different mobility models lead to very different outcomes.

We compare the results of several models applied to:
— a small region (~200,000 inhabitants), where the only viable generation resource is solar power; and
— a national system (Portugal), where solar (~45%) and wind (~40%) are the dominant resources.

The analysis shows why a battery swapping model for mobility clearly outperforms the others, both from the standpoint of the power system and of transport efficiency.
