Smart Networks for a Sustainable Future: Energy, Water, Environment, and Agriculture Talk Series – “Artificial Intelligence in Interaction with the Physical World”

This session will be an open discussion on the technologies transforming the management of essential resources and making our cities, rural areas, and public spaces smarter and more sustainable. The panel will explore how smart grids and artificial intelligence are integrating various energy sources, adjusting supply to real consumption, and improving efficiency in public lighting and buildings.
We will also address smart water networks that detect leaks and improve water management, as well as environmental monitoring systems that track air quality, noise, and carbon emissions—providing critical data to protect public health and the planet.
Precision agriculture will also take center stage, featuring agricultural robotics and innovative pasture control through virtual fencing, promoting more efficient and sustainable food production.
The session will feature António Pascoal (Instituto Superior Técnico and ISR-Lisboa/LARSyS), Alexandre Bernardino (Instituto Superior Técnico and ISR-Lisboa/LARSyS), and João Coimbra (Quinta da Cholda), among other speakers to be confirmed, and will be moderated by Tiago Domingos (Instituto Superior Técnico and MARETEC).
The talks in the series “Artificial Intelligence in Interaction with the Physical World”, a partnership between Instituto Superior Técnico and the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR-Lisboa), highlight successful collaborations between the scientific community and industry, aimed at solving practical problems or developing innovative solutions that have emerged or been launched from Portugal. Based on concrete cases available in the country, researchers from Técnico and its Research Units will present and discuss a lesser-known but highly relevant side of AI in our daily lives.
The talks will take place in the exhibition space of “Art with Science,” by Leonel Moura, showcasing artistic works developed using robotics and AI.
- Upcoming talks in the series:
- Artificial Intelligence in Health: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Personalized Care (January 23, 2026)
- AI Ethics and Social Responsibility (February 13, 2026)
