The University of Lisbon will award the Doctor Honoris Causa to Professor José Manuel Fonseca de Moura in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the academic, scientific and professional dimensions, worldwide and with a strong impact in Portugal and IST, in the areas of processing signal and data science.

The ceremony will take place at Instituto Superior Técnico (Salão Nobre), on September 13, 2021, starting at 2:30 pm.

Professor José Manuel Fonseca de Moura graduated in Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in 1969 and received his PhD degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1973.

He was a full professor at IST in the 1980s, a visiting professor at MIT, and is the Philip L. and Marsha Dowd University Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (EEC) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

The distinguished scientist and professor was president of the "Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers" (IEEE) in 2019, the world's largest professional association with around 422,000 members.
