Filipa Lino, a student of the Doctoral Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Liane Nóbrega, a student of the Master’s in Data Engineering and Science, received, on October 21, the Feedzai Women in Science & PhD Scholarship, which aims to promote gender equality by fostering the talent of women in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Throughout the ceremony, the students highlighted the importance of this scholarship not only for the financial support but also for the recognition of women’s capabilities in these fields.

The jury was composed of Alexandre Bernardino and Mário Figueiredo, professors from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Inês Lynce, professor from the Department of Computer Science, and Feedzai representatives Pedro Bizarro and Sofia Gomes. The jury highlighted the high quality of this year’s applications, which required the adoption of even more rigorous evaluation criteria. This year’s edition received more than 100 applications: “We started in 2022 with 20 candidates, and this year we received 109—an impressive number, not only for the quantity but for the quality of the participants,” noted Sofia Gomes. The Feedzai representative also emphasized that “this is just a small part of a journey that we hope will be much bigger,” reinforcing the commitment to gender equality.

During the session, Rogério Colaço, president of Instituto Superior Técnico, praised the long-standing partnership between the School and Feedzai, highlighting the Técnico Partner Network as the School’s main strategy to strengthen its connection with society and industry. He also spoke about the important role of this scholarship for the community: “Why Women in Science? Because, in fact, in STEM fields, there is a gender imbalance – and that is clear evidence that we are losing talent.”

We want to bring women into these fields and encourage their presence and leadership.
