Carolina Antunes and Maria Lobo Álvares Have Received “Women in Energy MSc” Scholarships

On October 3, the “Women in Energy MSc” scholarship award ceremony took place — an initiative promoted by TagEnergy. This year, out of 44 applicants, the selected students were Carolina Antunes, from the Master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Maria Lobo Álvares, from the Master’s in Energy Engineering and Management.

Carolina Antunes emphasized the importance of the support received, noting the impact of being able to fully dedicate herself to her studies. She also stated that “women play a key role in bringing new ideas and innovation to the energy sector.” Maria Lobo Álvares echoed this view, considering it “essential to be 100% focused on studies and to contribute to this sector.”

Margarida Cavaleiro, a recipient of the scholarship in the previous edition, was also invited to share her experience. For Margarida, “this scholarship holds a much deeper meaning — it’s about encouraging the recognition of women in this field.”

During the ceremony, Rogério Colaço, President of Técnico, reiterated the importance of encouraging more women to enter the fields of science, technology, and energy. He pointed out that Portugal and the tech sector still face a significant gender imbalance in the so-called STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

The event also featured a speech by Antoine Lajouanie, ESG and Asset Management Director at TagEnergy, who highlighted the value of the partnership with Técnico and the company’s ongoing commitment to promoting equal opportunities. Representing the jury, Adriana Martins stressed the importance of increasing female presence in the sector, sharing her personal experience: “Even with a relatively short career, I’ve already found myself being the only woman in the room far too often,” she said, adding that “these scholarships are an important step toward changing that reality.”

The Técnico jury included professors Patrícia Batista, Joana Portugal, and Alexandre Bernardino. From TagEnergy, the jury was composed of Adriana Martins, Sara Correia, and Mónica Andreu.
