Students from Escola Secundária D. Filipa de Lencastre explore the world of electronics

On the 28th, students from Escola Secundária D. Filipa de Lencastre visited the Alameda and Taguspark campuses of Técnico, with the goal of learning more about the field of electronic engineering.
The initiative was organized by Professor Marcelino dos Santos, as part of the European project GreenChips-EDU, which aims to promote and invest in training young people in this area to boost Europe’s presence in the global chip production market in the near future.
The day began with a lab activity, where the students were challenged to build an electronic system capable of alternately lighting two LEDs, using a breadboard. After studying the instructions and making several attempts, all teams successfully achieved the desired results, with continuous support from the attending faculty members.

After the practical activity, the students visited the student group workshops of TLMoto and PSEM – Mobile Energy Sustainability Project. TLMoto is currently developing a prototype of an electric racing motorcycle, while PSEM is participating in the Greenpower competition with its latest vehicle, entirely built by the students. In addition to presenting the structure and operation of their teams, the student group members emphasized the importance of electronics in their projects, particularly in areas such as energy management and control systems integration.

During the morning, they also visited SiliconGate, a company specializing in the development and optimization of electronic circuits for energy management. Marcelino dos Santos, co-founder of the company, shared insights about the design of integrated circuits used in various devices, such as earbuds. The students also visited the lab where characterization tests of the developed circuits are carried out, allowing their performance to be compared against the initial design specifications.

In the afternoon, which took place at the Taguspark campus, the students got to know N3E – the Student Group of Electronic Engineering, which includes undergraduate and master’s students. The group develops prototypes each year that participate in the National Robotics Festival and organizes various workshops and activities in the field.
Still at Taguspark, they also learned more about ISTSAT-1, the Portuguese satellite developed entirely by professors, researchers, and students at Técnico, which is currently in active orbit. Gonçalo Tavares explained the mission and objectives of the satellite to the students.
