IST Press publishes the book “Information Integrity With Mathematica” by Carlos Salema

«IST Press has published the second volume of the “Yellow Series | Science & Technology Series” collection, entitled Information Integrity With Mathematica, authored by Carlos Salema, Professor Emeritus at Instituto Superior Técnico.

Continuing the editorial line of the collection, this work — written in English — addresses the themes of information and coding, fundamental areas in the field of telecommunications. The author emphasizes that coding, although essential, is often undervalued in engineering education.
The book demonstrates how information can be stored, retrieved, and transmitted in different ways, exploring the potential of digitalization and the use of computers to transform data into knowledge.

Written by an engineer and aimed at Telecommunications Engineering students, the volume uses the “Mathematica” language, whose structure closely resembles mathematical notation, making the implementation of coding and decoding processes more intuitive.

In addition to this title, Carlos Salema is the author of two other works published in the “Science and Technology Teaching Collection,” reinforcing his contribution to technical and scientific literature in Portugal and abroad. Among them stands out the book Feixes Herzianos, the fourth volume of the collection (5th edition), later published in English by Wiley. The book Uma Introdução às Telecomunicações com Mathematica (An Introduction to Telecommunications with Mathematica) covers the fundamentals of telecommunications, at the level of an introductory course in Electrical Engineering or related fields.

Graduated in Electrical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (1965) and PhD from the University of London (Queen Mary College) (1972), Carlos Salema taught at Técnico until 2003 as a full professor, mainly in the area of microwave radio links, and was appointed Professor Emeritus in 2009.

He served as a telecommunications systems consultant at Hidrotécnica Portuguesa (1966–1986) and was president of the National Board for Scientific and Technological Research – JNICT (1986–1989). Since 1993, he has been affiliated with the Institute for Telecommunications, where he chaired the Board of Directors until 2023. He is a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences — which he presided over between 2007 and 2009 — a member of the Academy of Engineering, a consultant for the Portuguese Order of Engineers, and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers – IEEE.

Throughout his career, he has been distinguished with the IEEE Marconi Prize (1974), the Career Award of the International Union of Radio Science – URSI (2009), the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Beira Interior (2014), the Scientific Merit Medal (2021), and the Professor Emeritus Diploma from the Polytechnic School of Leiria (2023).
The author has published more than 30 scientific papers and five books, consolidating an outstanding academic and professional career dedicated to science, engineering, and the education of new generations of engineers.

The book is available at the IST Press online store and at Almedina, Bertrand, Fnac, and Wook bookstores, among others.»
