MakerIST 2025 Celebrates the Maker Culture

On June 3 and 4, the Alameda campus of Técnico hosted the 2025 edition of MakerIST, an event organized by the HackerSchool and Lounge IST to celebrate the maker culture, featuring workshops, themed booths, hands-on labs, demonstrations, exhibitions, and interactive activities.
Students had the opportunity to build macropads and MIDI pedals, witness experiments with electronic circuits, observe 3D printing demonstrations, and explore robotics exhibitions, connecting art with various branches of engineering and technological innovation developed at Técnico.

“We wanted to showcase the potential of the maker community, both inside and outside Técnico,” explained João Rodrigues, a Master's student in Electrical and Computer Engineering and member of HackerSchool, a student group focused on collaborative and technological projects. “We stand for open source, we share knowledge in technology and the arts. This event is about that — giving visibility to a movement that promotes sustainable development through collaboration and free access to knowledge.”

The event also welcomed organizations linked to free and open tech culture, such as FabLab Lisboa, Ansol, and Mauser. “It’s really rewarding to see these communities supporting makers, exchanging ideas, and coming together with the same spirit of sharing,” João Rodrigues added.
Open to the entire community and free of charge, MakerIST 2025 established itself as a “space for the convergence of technology, creativity, and experimentation,” celebrating making as a way of learning, communicating, and innovating.
