Escola Secundária da Moita observes experiments with superconductors

On May 15, we welcomed students from Escola Secundária da Moita. The morning began with a presentation of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) by Professor João Fernandes, who introduced the department’s areas of expertise and research. He also spoke briefly about the available degree programs and their curriculum structure, as well as the admission grades required for the current academic year.

After the presentation, the students visited the Energy and Sustainability and the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics modules.

In the Energy and Sustainability module, students saw some of the applications of electromagnetic induction and the use of superconducting materials. Through hands-on demonstrations, they observed how these materials can be used, for example, in high-speed trains that use magnetic levitation.

In the second module, students learned about the basic components of a robot and some of its possible functions. They also had the opportunity to interact with Bob, a robot that welcomes guests to events, tries to guess their age, and guides them to the host.

The visit ended with a group photo at the entrance of the north tower.

DEEC invites students and teachers to explore the various modules available.
