Portela Secondary School visits us twice!

On February 12th and 13th, we received several students from the Portela Secondary School. Both visits started with a presentation of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) by Professor João Fernandes, followed by modules on Energy and Sustainability, and Multimedia and Telecommunications.

The students had the opportunity to learn about the courses and activities available upon enrolling in the undergraduate programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering (LEEC), Electronics (LEE), Aerospace Engineering (LEAer), and Telecommunications and Informatics (LETI).

The Energy and Sustainability module was also presented by Professor João Fernandes. The students observed the levitation of materials through cooling them with liquid nitrogen.

The professor also explained how superconductors are used in the construction of high-speed trains.

The Multimedia and Telecommunications module was presented by Professor Custódio Peixeiro, who discussed a bit of the history of the study of electromagnetic waves, mentioning the contributions of Maxwell, Hertz, and Marconi.

Bringing theory into practice, throughout the presentations, the professor also conducted several experiments that demonstrated how electromagnetic waves are propagated.

The experiments also involved the participation of the students.
The visits ended with a positive feedback and the usual photos on the staircase at the entrance of the North Tower.
The DEEC invites students and professors to visit the different available modules.
