Escola Secundária de Sampaio visits the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Last Thursday, we received a visit from the students of the Sampaio Secondary School, part of the Sampaio School Group. The visit began with a presentation of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC), during which the students learned about the research and intervention areas of the DEEC, as well as some of its practical applications. During this presentation, given by Professor João Fernandes, the students also received more information about the general structure of the study plans, the available bachelor's and master's degrees, the entry grades, and the student groups they could join.

Next, they visited the Networks and Computers modules and the Multimedia and Telecommunications modules.

In the Networks and Computers module, António Betencourt discussed the functioning of equipment through the IoT protocol – Internet of Things, where different devices are connected and controlled through a network connection. He also demonstrated how the sound of a sensor could be turned on and off using a mobile app.

In the Multimedia and Telecommunications module, the students learned how quantum physics can be used in network communication. Although there are still some disadvantages associated with it, researchers are working on solutions to enhance user cybersecurity.

The visit ended with a photograph on the stairs of the north tower.

The DEEC invites students and teachers to visit the various available modules.
