Researchers from DEEC participate in euROBIN

Between November 24th and 28th, the SocRob@Home team, consisting of researchers from Técnico and the Institute of Systems and Robotics, participated in a robotics competition in Nancy, France, and received an honorary third place at this scientific event.
Rodrigo Serra, team leader, researcher at ISR-Lisbon, and alumnus of the Integrated Master's in Electrical and Computer Engineering, mentioned the objectives and challenges faced during the competition: "We participated in the Service Robots League with the goal of tackling one of the biggest challenges in robotics: developing software modules that are reusable across various robot platforms and tasks, with exceptional flexibility and robustness. In addition to the competition, we had the privilege of collaborating and learning from some of the best European institutions, including the German Aerospace Center, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, INRIA, and many others."
This competition involved 32 European research teams, 50 robots, 18 robotics teams, and about 500 scientists and professionals from the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics.
The relevance and impact of the contributions from the ISR/Técnico team should not be underestimated.
Pedro Lima, professor at Técnico and president of ISR-Lisbon
Pedro Lima, professor at Técnico, president of ISR-Lisbon, and lead researcher for the European project euROBIN, states that "the concept of coopetition (cooperative competition) as a way to motivate teams to develop easily transferable and reusable modules on robotic platforms was warmly praised by the President of the AI and Robotics Excellence Unit at the European Commission and the project evaluators, emphasizing that this could be a new concept to be used in all EU-funded Robotics projects."
The event highlighted the latest technological advances through live demonstrations, cooperative competitions, and public engagement activities, including workshops, guided tours, and round tables.
