Unmanned Marine Surface Vehicle (USV) developed in SEMS4USV project, performs surveillance mission at river Tagus

On the 17th July 2024, a surveillance mission with an Unmanned Marine Surface Vehicle (USV) developed in SEMS4USV project, was performed at river Tagus, between Oeiras and “Ponte 25 de Abril”, during 3h45min.

Results have shown the possibility of extending the USV range up to 70% at normal sea/river conditions. Under calm environmental conditions the inclusion of photovoltaic panels could lead to unlimited range during daytime.

The SEMS4USV project from ENIDH/IST was one of the four recipients of the FRONTEX RESEARCH GRANTS PROGRAMME in 2023. It is focused on the development of a fossil-free USV integrating electric propulsion, batteries, photovoltaic panels, cameras, and navigation sensors.

The IST team of this project are professors João Fernandes and Paulo Branco, from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
