Instituto Superior Técnico's Oeiras campus will host a new data center designed to strengthen its capacity to meet the growing demands of research, innovation, and collaboration with industry through advanced computing and artificial intelligence systems. The facility will expand scientific data processing and storage capabilities, supporting research in areas such as healthcare, biotechnology, precision medicine, clinical research, and new drug discovery. It is expected to become one of the largest digital infrastructures in Portuguese higher education.

A new cloud platform will also be developed to store and process the scientific data managed by the University of Lisbon, ensuring high standards of security, control, and data governance, particularly for projects involving sensitive information.

The new data center will also foster collaboration with companies, startups, spin-offs, and industrial partners, serving the University of Lisbon's Innovation Ecosystem.

The infrastructure has been made possible through the approval of the ULISBOA CORE – Computational Omics for Resilient Economies – and ULISBOA CORE+ – Sovereign AI4Science Cloud for Bio-Digital Data projects, developed in partnership by Instituto Superior Técnico, the Faculty of Sciences, the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM), and the University of Lisbon Rectorate. Funded by the Lisbon 2030 Regional Programme, the initiative represents an investment of more than €20 million.

A second data center is also planned for the Faculty of Sciences campus in Cidade Universitária, with completion scheduled for October 2028.
