Inauguration of the Energy Dream Lab

On May 29, at 1:30 p.m., the inauguration of the Energy Dream Lab will take place at the energy laboratory (next to Técnico’s side entrance, on Avenida António José de Almeida).
The Energy Dream Lab is an advanced research and testing infrastructure dedicated to the integration of distributed energy resources and new energy end-uses within active power systems, combining expertise in power systems, power electronics, artificial intelligence, energy management and telecommunications. Designed as a system-of-systems platform, it enables realistic simulation and validation of smart grid solutions involving renewable energy sources, electric mobility, battery storage systems, AC/DC hybrid microgrids, and power electronic interfaces, while also addressing communication and interoperability challenges.
The laboratory integrates simulation tools with real-world demonstrators, allowing the validation of algorithms and methodologies under realistic operating conditions. The Lab supports several national and European projects, including EV4EU, AHEAD, SHIFT2DC, U2Demo, PVSmile, SOLAR-MOVE, and ATE, representing a combined IST/INESC ID research portfolio of approximately €6 million, and is part of a national laboratory network under the ATE Association focused on strategic areas such as offshore wind, solar energy, hydrogen, electric transportation, DC systems, and grid integration.
In parallel, the laboratory will modernize teaching activities for more than 250 students per year through hands-on experimentation, Power Hardware-in-the-Loop platforms, remote laboratories, and real-time simulation environments, reinforcing its role as a reference facility for research, innovation, demonstration, and education in the energy transition domain.
