On May 20, the Portuguese Communications Foundation will mark World Telecommunications Day with the lecture “Digital lifelines: Strengthening resilience in a connected world.” The event will feature Rui Rocha, former lecturer at DEEC and researcher at the Institute of Telecommunications, and Rui Franco, an Electrical and Computer Engineering alumnus and CEO of REN.

“Telecommunications connections are currently a fundamental asset of modern societies. Terrestrial networks, submarine cables, satellites, and data networks form the backbone of the economy. From governments to industry, all must be prepared to respond efficiently to disasters and ensure that no one is left isolated in critical moments, such as a cable break, a failure in a data center, or an issue with a satellite.

In an era of increasing natural risks and technological dependence, building resilient digital infrastructures is essential for system stability, as well as for economic growth and sustainability.
